day 02 – 04.07.09 – part 2

in order not to get the idea that Oslo in simply an Opera House, I am going to surprise you with a few more pictures taken there
(for the record, I will try to recreate the last few days which were characterized by Niki’s frowning and, to my surprise, our isolation from civilization and, above all, THE Internet)

so

Oslo, as you can already imagine, is a port… as well as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Rotterdam… (and perhaps many more but I have seen these myself…) and just like in any city by the water, we head towards the waterfront in search of an interesting public area along the shore; this is the area of the port or the part of it open for public use:

30

I don’t know if this is a tourist attraction or they really have them all the time but there are plenty of these things:

31

(not to say that they weren’t delicious, though 🙂

as well as these things:

33

which turned out to be public restrooms

let’s take a little detour here: all public restrooms (sometimes just one restroom) are designed for the disabled; there are no separate cells; there are just huge restrooms, equipped for the disabled; they are not really impressive in terms of design (except for the ones I will show you next) but they are clean and fully equipped.

we pass by the huge square and walk on the coastal street with new buildings, malls, apartment buildings, cafes, etc. which are a true ‘deja vu’ (Vella, please correct my French here – I have no idea how it is supposed to be spelled)

34

35

36

37

38

39

but of course: a public square with small streets around it and a public canal with docks for boats…

did you notice the statues?

40

I have no idea why anything in this country would need a shade from the sun but it is a fact; the same square on the other side:

41

42

we continue, headed for the sea

43

a small detail from the second façade:

45

here are some details of the pavings and the “city environment”:

46

there’s more:

47

we finally get to the coastal line which is overpopulated; it is unusually warm in Oslo (close to 30˚C) and every living thing is outside, sitting on the grass or at the cafes for the more fussy ones:

48

49

50

we continue our walk across the older part of Oslo which is not as not that famous for its contemporary architecture, so I will skip it 🙂

in the evening, however, we get in the car in search of the Nydalen neighborhood where we should find the university campus

it is midnight

51

52

53

unfortunately, it is past midnight in the middle of summer

the place is deserted and it is, of course, locked.

the architect is Niels Torp again

and now something interesting on the way back; this building was right next to the university:

54

it is nothing special at a first glance but if you look closely, there is actually a huge space behind the glass facades, packed tightly with machines, looking like an electricity power plant substation or a production line in desperate need for some sunlight 🙂
