“A Non-Architectural Dream Home” with an extraordinarily important yard (and bathroom) :)

Posted: November 14th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: fun | No Comments »

We really liked the idea for this project because it somehow demands you to put into words and images the tons of ideas that you have accumulated in the “perfect home” category over the years. The truth is, there is no way to achieve having this dream home without imagining it first. Thanks for the invitation (you have no idea what you’re getting into)!

Thanks indeed. No good deed goes unpunished!

It is weird that the moment you afford yourself the luxury of dreaming, you also find yourself in the middle of a mental argument between what you think you want and the conventions that come along with these wishes… at least, this is my experience Free Smiley Courtesy of www.millan.net. That is why I shall 😉 begin with the conventions:

  • If I can afford this house, then I am definitely a frequent traveller and my home is the place that I enjoy getting back to, spending lazy days there (this is a basic requirement) and planning my next trip.
  • It is almost unfair that I cannot produce any kind of visualizations but in an attempt to illustrate my idea better (and due to the lack of good descriptive skills on my behalf), I am going to use something designed by Patrizio Fradiani (described in THIS blog: it turned out to be an interesting one and the majority from the pictures are taken from that post).
  • • In order for me to have the yard (described later on), there is a good chance that this house may have to be located in Tuscany… but, at the same time, a dream home would not be a dream home without all the people that you love inside, making it difficult for this particular house to be far away from here… that is why I keep telling myself that the world is my oyster and I should not be afraid of the distances, especially when dreaming.

Yep… Honestly, I am the person defined by extremes and negativism in our group. And with all due respect to Elena for the birds and rainbows she brings into our communication, today I will benevolently agree with her “conventions”, only if these “frequent travels” do not include a lot of air transportation… Brrr… In this line of reasoning… at least we will not have to dream of a small private runway in the backyard which, we have to admit, is a money-saver right away.

But… getting back to the house! It is amaaaaaaazing to say the least! All natural materials, warmth and pastel colors. There is a lot of natural light and plenty of “air”. Almost nothing stops your eye and the touch of all the surfaces is a pleasure.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. All of this comfort, sensuality, shape and color. I would modestly add the word “cozy” to that, although, of course, this is a subjective concept. I want my house to be sooooo nice that even if I decide to lay down on the floor in the basement, I would still feel great, and protected, and warm, and… уютен дом

Едно от най-добрите качества на къщата е, че към нея има огромен двор (за него след малко), но с цел да се опише прекрасността на самата къща, ето и няколко екзистенциално важни елементи от нея (in no particular order):

  • Inside arches (perhaps they have a name) – the fewer the walls, the better:
  • A fireplace – it is important that it goes up to the ceiling and it is riveted with slabstones.
  • The windows would have a profile similar to the arches and they would take up the majority of the outside walls plus they would have really wide window sills in the bedrooms where you can sit and read (and they should be big, French if you will… even for the sound of it)… oh! and
  • A library – it should be a separate room…. or a ton of book-filled shelves all over the house… this idea is still under construction 😉 (Elena, Elena… and who will be dusting all this???)
  • • A Creative Room – this room would be somewhat of an office space and besides the desk and a computer inside, it also has walls covered with white board wallpapers, where you can write down whatever you like. This is where I would work on the ideas that pay the utility bills… electricity, water… 🙂 (Water? Haha, come again! If this were a house in Tuscany, there would be wine pouring down the faucet as in all wise folklore tales… Helloooo, Life!)
  • iRobot – this is more of a thing but I definitely hate the “cleaning your dream home” part of the equation and it would be great if there was a small, inaudible, intelligent and everything~ unnecessary-engulfing vacuum cleaner/robot – it is not too much to ask! (you know perfectly well that it does not climb up the walls, so we are still going to need staff for cleaning our entire Danielle Steel collection in the “Library”! )
  • A large veranda – something similar but with simpler chairs:

(A view to a sea, an ocean or another big water basin is strongly recommended. I also have preferences in terms of the exact shade of blue) This image is from travelpage.gr. I just can’t imagine how on earth we are going to be able to combine Tuscany and the Greek Mediterranean… but let’s not get lost in the details…

  • An outdoor shower with a marvelous view ((This is where I shrug my shoulders. This has never come to mind even in my wildest dreams but if she wants one so much… Perhaps something like this for the sake of architectural trendiness?)

  • Well, I apologize but I still do not see the most important part of the house being discussed… vis a vie – the bathroom. I am quoting my reference song here:

“[…]And a bathroom I can play baseball in
And a king size tub big enough
For ten plus me”

(PS: I don’t know if this is where I should include the Jacuzzi-Shmakizzi and the 100 supermodels in it, who, apparently, need to go in 10 by 10…?!)

…and somewhat naturally, we come out to the yard, at this point, where we find a list of some just as existentially important elements (once again, in no particular order):

  • A plot of spices – this is of crucial gastronomic importance and it includes: cilantro, basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme… (we are open to suggestions here, especially if you’re coming over for dinner):

(I’ll “pass” on all types of plants, flowers, and trees that require anything else other than admiration. Ryegrass? Yes, please!)

  • A swimming pool – apparently, it just HAS TO BE an infinity pool (how else are you going to swim around without reaching the horizon):

  • A hammock – the existence of people who have yards but they don’t even have a single hammock in them is a mystery to me … I’ll never grasp that 🙂

Perhaps these people have not yet mastered the art of the steady hammock knots. I, for one, have had a bitter experience with an unsuccessfully suspended hammock. Remember? Anyway. I tend to be a fan of the more stable constructions like (for instance) the “patio” swing (especially designed for this purpose) which is characterized not only by solidity… it is accompanied by soft pillows in “warm colors” that don’t leave a mark on your… you-know-what… wooooooow, even the outdoor shower is included in the picture (in case you ever doubted you were still following our dream home experience!) With my swing on the background…

Designed by Giorgio Parise… He visited just yesterday, so we could discuss the sketches.

and so… we get to the primary reason we just decided that we do not only want a yard but “land” 🙂

A few hectares of Pinot Noir, as far as the eyes can see, would give everything a sound purpose… but, on the other hand… this grape variety could be quite fastidious… and something more cabernetish would be much more realistic. And that’s it… a boutique export of… Cabernet 🙂 (Export? How many hectares do we have exactly that they are enough to cover our personal needs and even suffice for export quantities??? Let’s not get carried away here.)

I forgot to mention, that there is a big picnic bag inside the house that holds everything you’ll ever need for a sunny afternoon among the vines. (I sense something resembling Harmayani’s bag, from the last two movies. Ooops, is it too geeky to admit we’ve seen these?)

It is essential to point out that all that’s left to do is for your team to design it for us 😉

…for your personal pleasure and on your own free time…
