the way we welcome natural light and fresh air in everyday life and block the heat.

Overhanging volumes combined with voids through all stories give deep shadows and air ventilation – a perfect open space for such a climate – warm during most of the year and extremely hot for two months.

The Tetris building is a complex of two module units – apartments for two and single rooms.

A single room contains a bed (100x200cm), a wardrobe and a desk and a bathroom. The total area of the single room is 13.4 m2. Its constructive height is 2.9 m. For all inhabitants a common kitchen is provided at each floor. These common spaces are next to large terraces which open air dining.

Each apartment contains a spacious living room with working place for two, raised on 60cm over the entrance level. The space under the raised floor could be used as storage, accessible from trap-doors in the floor. There is a kitchen box in the entrance, and a door leading to the bathroom. Above the entrance and the bathroom, on a light construction a bedroom for two is situated a queen bed or with two single beds. In front of the living room there is a large loggia. The total area of the apartment is 31.8 m2 and constructive height – 5.00m.

The variety of units provides optimal rate between combinative volume solutions and adaptability for the alternative use – social dwellings.

All the levels are accessible from an open metal stair in the core of the building, which goes to the green roof – garden.

The first floor is drawn back to the back of the plot in order to free up space in front of the building for public use and bike parking. That way, except of an open reception space for the dwellers, we obtain an enriched street space for all the citizens. The entrance of the building is at a lower level (-0.6m) than the terrain level due to the height limitation of 15.5m. The apartments on the first level have a real green backyard. At that level, under the stairs there is a place for laundry for all the students. The second floor contains five single rooms with one common kitchen. This floor is hanging over the public space under, providing sun protection for it.

On the top level there are two apartments. They are adjoining to the existing building, looking in two opposite directions. That way there is a free space for open air living room for all the dwellers in the TETRIS, shaded by the top of the building. That open living room is a place for a table tennis or sofas. That should be the most pleasant spot in the building.

All units have natural light and view. Each unit is has sun-shading awning – for the apartments, the awnings are for the loggias.

the Sun is our dearest friend and most ferocious foe

mild climate conditions on the south coast of Europe adorn sun in winter and condemn it in summer; the need for sun-shading leads to closely packed urban landscape, narrow streets and almost no open space between buildings as open space is also open for the burning sun; open public spaces are desolate during the day and become inhabited late at night

the design proposed seeks generation of an open public space for all seasons in Athens

this space in the students housing case serves as open shared living area and in the case of common housing can shelter all public, social and commercial services of a housing district – restaurants and cafes with view towards the street, small shops, children playgrounds or just the small garden to sit by and have a chat with the neighbors
the voids are tree stories high and slightly terraced towards the street, covered; with a minimal width of 9 meters (wider than the small streets) these voids, interconnected at ground level, form a pedestrian open area, sheltered from the sun; common living units at level 2 and 3 overlook the voids; towards the back of the plots the squares are blocked by loft units with private gardens; the top of these units is planted with grass and shrubs and used as a common space for the sole housing unit; at the top, where there is view, are the deluxe living units – lofts with huge shadable glazing towards the rooftops; they are placed over the voids thus shading them

the height of the voids allows for natural vegetation also benefiting from the lack of direct sunlight; sun enters these areas in the morning and in the evening when the heat is lower; parallel to the street from underneath the top floors mist generators create thin mist barrier; the mist moisturizes the air, permanently irrigating the inner vegetation and cools the air inside the void; thus an invisible barrier is created allowing for a climatic control of the inner space; rainwater is drained, collected under the building in soak away attenuation units and reused for the mist in summer; in winter water slowly infiltrates in the ground, continuing the natural water cycle
